Objectives
- To promote development of national health research systems in countries and areas in the Region.
- To promote and advocate ethical standards in health research.
- To develop effective links with other organizations involved in health research.
- To promote use of research results and other information in health policy-making and in provision of health services.
The ultimate benefit of research lies not only in the generation of new knowledge but also in the translation of knowledge into strategies, technologies, and interventions that are effectively and appropriately delivered to benefit the people, in particular the poor and other vulnerable groups.
The Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Health Research (WPACHR) was established by Regional Committee resolution WPR/RC/26.R10 in 1975 to advise the Regional Director on research activities. Members of the Committee are outstanding scientists and research administrators appointed by the Regional Director. WPACHR holds at least one regular session every two years. In 2003, the WPACHR prepared the Regional Framework for Health Research, which was endorsed by the Regional Director.
The regional focal point for health research is also the regional focal point for management of WHO Collaborating Centres of which there are currently about 190 in the Region.
