Achievements on health-related MDGs in WPRO

  • A High Level Forum on the Health MDGs in Asia and the Pacific was held in Tokyo on 21-22 June 2005. The Forum brought together development, finance and health ministers from countries throughout the region with their counterparts from a wide range of international agencies. Together they took stock of progress, and identified challenges and opportunities for accelerating momentum towards the achievement of the health MDGs. Hosted by the Government of Japan in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and the World Health Organization, the meeting focused on actions that can be initiated at country level and strengthened through regional cooperation. Experiences and best practice from Asia and the Pacific will be an important input to the global review of progress on MDGs taking place in 2005.
  • WPRO and SEARO have developed a brochure on the Core Health Indicators (Core Indicators 2005), as well as another on the MDG-related indicators (Health-related Millennium Development Goals 2005), for all WPRO and SEARO Member States and areas.
  • WPRO has set up a technical working group on MDGs, with members from relevant technical units, to support MDG implementation and monitoring in member States and areas and liaise with HQ and country offices.
  • Future technical support will focus on
  1. Conducting advocacy and building awareness among Member States on the MDGs
  2. Building national capacity for health monitoring and reporting, particularly tracking progress and measuring achievements
  3. Collaboration with other agencies to strengthen MDG monitoring and promote its integration with national health system planning
  4. Promoting pro-poor and equitable progress on the MDGs
