The estimated multiethnic population of New Caledonia was 217 729 in 2002.  The population consists of 42.5% Melanesians, 37.1% Europeans, 8.4% Wallisians, 3.8% Polynesians, 3.6% Indonesians, 1.6% Vietnamese and 3% other nationalities.  The population density is 11 persons per sq km.

The natural per annum growth rate is 1.4% and life expectancy at birth is high for both women (77.6 years) and men (69.9 years).   Infant, child and maternal mortality rates are low. In 2002, the infant mortality rate was 6.9 per 1000.  The overall birth rate decreased from 28 per 1000 in 1981 to 19.3 per 1000 population in 2002. The fertility rate is 2.4 children per female.

There is a high level of adult literacy, estimated to be 91% of the total population (male 92%, female 90%).
