Based on the results of the 2001 census and the data on population changes since then, the resident population of Macao (China) was estimated at 448 495 as at 31 December 2003, an increase of 1858 since December 2002, representing an annual growth rate of 1.5%. Among the resident population, 48.1% were males and 51.9% were females. As regards distribution by age group, 18.6% of the population were aged 0-14 and 7.9% 65 and above. Compared with 2002, the proportion of residents aged 0-14 dropped 14 percentage points, while those aged 65 and above went up 0.2 of a percentage point.
The natural increase of the population is an important factor in population growth. In Macao, 3212 live births and 1474 deaths were recorded in 2003, up by 1.6% and 4.2% respectively compared with 2002. The natural growth rate was 0.4%.
Population migration is another important factor in population growth. In 2003, there was an inflow of 6439 persons, including legal and illegal immigrants from Mainland China, persons authorized to reside in Macao and non-resident workers. In the same year, the estimated number of emigrants was 1319 persons.
