As of 01 October 2004, the total population of Japan was estimated to be 127 687 000, comprising 62 295 000 males and 65 392 000 females, indicating a total population increase of  68 000 or 0.05% during the last year.  With regards to distribution by age group, 13.9% of the population are aged 0-14 years, 66.6%  15-64 years and 19.5% 65 years and over.
