Australia had a population of 20 111 297 in 2004, 77% Australian-born, 2.4% with indigenous status and 23% overseas-born. The average age of the population is 35 years with a life expectancy at birth of 77.8 years for men and 82.8 years for women. It is one of the world’s most urbanized countries, with about 70% of the population living in the 10 largest cities. Most of the population is concentrated along the eastern seaboard and the south-eastern corner of the continent.
