In 2004, American Samoa had an estimated population of 62 600, with around 40% of them below 15 years of age. Almost 4% were above 65 years of age.  The average age was estimated at 21.3 years.  About one-half of the population resides in urban areas.  As of the latest census in 2000, life expectancy at birth for men is 69 years, while for women it is 76 years.  Based on 2004 estimates, there are 104 males for every 100 females.
