New Zealand lies in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is made up of the North and South Islands and a number of smaller islands, with a total land area of 270 692 square kilometres. The main North and South Islands are separated by Cook Strait, which at its narrowest point is 20 kilometres (km) wide. New Zealand is more than 1600 km long and 450 km wide at its widest part, and has a long coastline.
