The Japanese archipelago, lying off the eastern coast of the Asian continent, stretches in a narrow arc 3800 kilometres long.   Japan’s total area is 377 887 square kilometres – slightly larger than the United Kingdom but only about one-ninth the size of India and one-twenty-fifth that of the United States of America – represents less than 0.3% of the world’s land area.
