Fiji is the largest of the South Pacific island countries in population and the second largest in land area.  The estimated population for 2002 was 872 985, occupying around two-thirds of the 322 islands.  Fiji’s population is concentrated on the two largest islands, Viti Levu (10 429 km2) and Vanua Levu, (5556 km2), with the nation's capital of Suva located on Viti Levu.  The estimated annual rate of population growth has dropped from 1.2% in 1986 to 0.8% in 1996 (last census).
